The report nobody has to assemble on Monday
Most reporting problems are not visualisation problems. They are someone spending half a day a week turning three systems into one spreadsheet.
The dashboard is rarely the hard part. The hard part is that the numbers live in three places, disagree, and someone reconciles them by hand.
So the question is not what the chart looks like but what decision it supports and what is currently stopping it. Often the data is fine and the assembly is manual — an automation problem wearing a reporting costume.
If your reporting problem is really a data problem, I will say so before building a beautiful view of numbers you cannot rely on.
- →Reporting that resolves without anyone assembling it
- →Numbers that reconcile rather than approximately agree
